Taking the AMTRAK train from Portland to Seattle week after week in 2019 I got to see the world going by in a barrage of signs and arrows. I started working on this song. Larry pitched in and wrote the second verse. Rhesa made the background music track. I sang the vocals. Steve helped mix the song and reorganized it a little. - Elton November 13, 2021

Lyrics

(Introduction)

(Verse 1)
When I see the open road stretch out ahead
And the things I might encounter fill my mind
Flying by in a barrage of signs and arrows
Are the monuments to heroes left behind

(Chorus)
The road tells of their story
Of lives filled with heartache and glory
I gaze back in time to the heroes we left behind

(Verse 2)
I plot a course for byways yet untraveled
Pursuing this remote, elusive dream
For today is but a doorway to tomorrow
And not all things are exactly as they seem

(Repeat Chorus)
The road tells of their story
Of lives filled with heartache and glory
I gaze back in time to the heroes we left behind

(Solo by Rhesa)

(Verse 3)
When at last we shuffle off this mortal coil
And the dreams that we aspire to lose their shine
Will some passer by take time to fashion
A monument to things we left behind?

(Repeat Chorus)
The road tells of their story
Of lives filled with heartache and glory
I gaze back in time to the heroes we left behind
